The Pupkins-Zalupkins trace their noble lineage to the mists of antiquity. According to family legend, ancestor Yefim Pupkin rose to fame by defeating the local governor in three consecutive days of dominoes. The hyphenated suffix "Zalupkins" was adopted in honour of the village of Zalupki, birthplace of grandmother Agafya, renowned for her borscht and her opinion on everything.
